Xbox boss Phil Spencer describes Shading with variable rate, Quick Resume and more.

In a new Xbox Wire article, Xbox boss Phil Spencer confirmed that Xbox Series X will provide 12 Teraflops GPU performance with its RDNA 2 architecture. This is in line with statements that Spencer has made in the past that the console supplies the eightfold performance of the basic Xbox One-GPU. Spencer explained that the console with state-of-the-art techniques provides a real generation jump in terms of processing and graphics performance, resulting in higher frame rates, greater, more demanding game worlds and impressive experience, as can not be found in console games.

In addition to support for hardware-accelerated DirectX raytracing Spencer also spoke about variable rate shades. This form of VRS is the patent of Microsoft. Spencer notices: Instead of using GPU cycles uniformly for each individual pixel on the screen, [developers] can prioritize individual effects to specific characters or important environmental objects. This technique leads to more stable frame rates and a higher resolution without compromising the final image quality.

There is also a fast CV with which several games can be stopped immediately and continued. Dynamic latency input for improved precision with the Xbox Wireless Controller; and HDMI 2.1 functions such as low latency automotive mode and the variable update rate. The frame rate of 120 images per second, an important sales argument for the console, is also mentioned. There is also Smart Delivery, with which you can play the best available version of a game on the console of its choice.

Overall, a fairly good spread of functions, although we hope we will hear more in the coming months. The Xbox Series X should start at this Christmas time. The price has not yet been confirmed. More information is available here.
