Pokémon Go (spelling: Pokémon GO) is a game for handheld mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet computers. In the game, players can catch and develop virtual fantasy creatures (Pokémon) and compete against each other in virtual battles. The game had been downloaded over a billion times by the end of 2018. Pokémon Go was developed by software company Niantic for the iOS and Android operating systems. It is a location-based game and uses a game environment based on the principle of augmented reality. The game uses the Global Positioning System (GPS) and real-time localization to determine the player's location data and virtually positions them on a map based on OpenStreetMap maps.
