Formula 1 - Hungary-GP: Vettel second at Ocon victory - stages after crash with Botta's only tenth
Esteban Ocon won the Grand Prix of Hungary. In a completely chaotic race (all developments in the LiveTticker to reading) won the Alpine Pilot before Sebastian Vettel (Aston Martin) and Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton. Max Stapen (Red Bull) was only tenth for a 19th Mercedes because of an early crash with Valtteri Bottas.
"I've tried, trying, tries," spelled Vettel after the target passage to the Aston Martin Box. Tried, but not done: Ocon in Alpine Renault defended his leadership with the very last commitment to the finish. "Sure, I'm a bit disappointed because I had the feeling, I'm a little faster, over a large part of the race," said Vettel, "but Esteban did not make a single mistake and I was never close enough to it. On this Range you can not overtake so easily. "
The winner, however, showed himself overjoyed due to his first F1 victory. "That's the first victory for Renault since they have returned. We had a few difficult moments this season, which we could solve together as a team," Ocon said. Especially for teammate Fernando Alonso, which Hamilton had been in chess during the final lane, the Frenchman had losing praising words: "We could also win the victory thanks to him today, he fought hard. This is teamwork. A fantastic day. Many People told me things about Fernando before he came, but that's not true. He is a fantastic guy. I enjoy our cooperation. "
Hamilton, in Hungary in his part, missed his 100th victory in Formula 1, as comfort overflowed the Englishman, however, Max Stapen. The 23-year-old experienced after an early crash, triggered by Valtteri Bottas, with place ten the next disappointment and is now six points behind Hamilton in the World Cup rating.
"If you look at the circumstances today, I am very satisfied," Hamilton said, "we made ourselves a little hard ourselves, but I have given everything. Now I am empty, completely spaced."
Hungary-GP: The analysis
Already at the start, the events were over. On a damp track Bottas came from the starting place two coming only sluggish from the spot. For all the abundance, the Finn missed the braking point to curve one and crashed into the Lando Norris Lando Norris. The McLaren pilot in the consequence lost control of his carnation and again drove outstapping into the site, which had set one to the elongation in curve one. Sergio Perez was also hit by the departing bottas, which has spent the race already after the first round.
Also not continuing Lance Stroll, the Charles Leclerc and Daniel Ricciardo drove over the pile. While the damage to the Aston Martin and Ferrari were too big, Ricciardo could at least continued the race.
Large profiteers of the chaos' were Sebastian Vettel, who looked out of all the mess and jumped on P3, Williams driver Nicholas Latifi, who ranked from P18 to six stepped and Mick Schumacher, who climbed from P20 before in place ten. Due to the many parts on the track, the race had to be broken off, only half an hour later it was continued under the starting start. Especially the RB-Crew came the break located because one had the opportunity to carry out repairs on the car from stages.
The restart followed the next highlight. The only pilot Hamilton opted for a start in the grid - on the intermediates. All the other remaining 14 pilots arose before starting into the pit lane and moved up fresh dry tires to respond to the changed route conditions. This also turned out to be the completely right choice, Hamilton and Mercedes responded - after the Brit had been the only pilot in the launch - only after the first rounded round, which dropped the world champion to the end of the field.
At the top there was thus an extremely curious picture. Esteban Ocon led the field in front of Vettel and Latifi, behind it were found with Yuki Tsunoda (Alphatauri / P4), George Russell (Williams / P7), Kimi Räikkönen (Alfa Romeo / P8) and Schumacher (P10) also rare guests within the top 10. Stages (P11) and Hamilton (P13), on the other hand, had to fight with the actually faster bolides through the field, which turned out to be difficult on the overhaul-friendly hungara ring.
Hungary-GP: Ocon rescues victory in front of Vettel
Only with the first pit stops came movement. Hamilton made the beginning and pulled up the hard tires, pointing to the Mercedes driver with fresh pneus and free ride could deliver much faster lap times. Immediately Ricciardo and stages reacted with a stop on hard, which was initiated by the silver ranges Undercut worked fine and Hamilton Hamilton.
It was followed by a catch-up Hamilton, who plowed with the new Pneus and his Mercedes by the in the meantime a little further exploded field. On the part, stages could not follow, as the damage to his Red Bull turned out to be too difficult.
At the top you noticed nothing at first. Due to the great projection on the midfield - Latifi and Schumacher, the field had been partially solid - the guided Ocon, Vettel, Sainz, Tsunoda and Alonso had only in the second half to the stop. First mentioned remained even before the precursor Hamilton, only Alonso and Tsunoda fell behind the reigning world champion.
Since Hamilton's tires walked towards the end to the end, Mercedes 20 laps decided again for a pit stop before the end. You had to push P4 to Fernando Alonso, even after a few rounds, the residue, thanks to fresh medium, was returned. Again, however, overtaking turned out to be difficult. Several times Hamilton's attacks against the Alpine Pilot, Alonso drove this hard but fair. Only five laps in front of the end succeeded the British the way over, including Sainz, who was still on older tires, left Hamilton no chance.
An attack on the top but no longer succeeded, Ocon drove his victory sovereign home, behind Vettel finished the race in second place. Behind the first five complete Pierre Gasly (Alphatauri / 6.), Yuki Tsunoda (Alphatauri / 7.), Nicholas Latifi (Williams / 8.), George Russell (Williams / 9.) And Max (Red Bull / 10) The top 10.
Hungary-GP: The tire strategy
The start on Intermediates threw the tactical advantage of Mercedes - on the medium to start - overboard. Strategic maneuvers were then only possible when drying the track, the first mistake Mercedes committed that they did not ask Hamilton to the pit lane and left the British as the single driver on waste tires.
The first dry stint was then denied by all drivers on the medium. Lying in the middle of the field, stages and Hamilton nevertheless had great problems with overtaking, which is why Mercedes only took up the hard tires at Hamilton after the exchange on medium and attached to undercut. This also succeeded just a round with fresh tires and free ride handed the Mercedes pilot to move past the reactive ricciardo and stages.
Many of the other drivers alternately changed quickly to the hards, which appeared as the overall better tires in the lead speed. Longer stints only allowed the tip to Ocon, Vettel, Sainz, Alonso and Tsunoda, which depended on the second race half due to the large projection.
The only driver chose Hamilton and stages for another stop on new tires for a last push, but especially in stages, this showed no effect. Hamilton could no longer attack the top.
Highlight of the race: start-chaos
Already in the first round, it went over and over. Bottas caught an extremely weak start, which Norris still use on the start-and-target straight for a overtaking maneuver. In the direct wind shadow, the Finn then missed the brake point for curve one on wet route and crashed into the rear of the McLaren pilot.
This triggered a chain reaction, because NORRIs also lost control and drove into the side, which had already lying a little further forward already to lying in curve. Bottas also slipped in Perez in the second Red Bull. Except for stages, all those involved had to end the race.
The second crisis had been playing a little further back in the field. Similar to Bottas, stroll agreed upon starting on the first curve and cleared Leclerc, which in turn drove to Ricciardo.
Also an absolute highlight: the solo restart of Lewis Hamilton.
Top of the race: Esteban Ocon
Many money could have been able to do, you would have bet on the Alpine pilot as a winner. Since this Sunday, Esteban Ocon race winner may call himself. On the one hand, he has to be owed to the chaotic race, but on the other hand, but also a completely error-free and strong own performance. Also strong: Sebastian Vettel, Fernando Alonso and the two Williams, who first imported points this season.
Flop of the race: Valtteri Bottas
Bad tongues would argue that Bottas fulfilled his job in perfection this weekend. With his crash, he ruined the race of Max stages, the other red-bull pilot, Sergio Perez, he shot so violently that the Mexican had to give up. Of course, he did not deliberately trigger the mass crash in Round one, but it showed once more, as amateurish and awkward of the Finn aged. Rumors about the fixed replacement by George Russell at the end of the season is already available, after this weekend, the decision should definitely have fallen.
